OG Factions, the way it used to be

Old-school Minecraft factions: claim land, build a base, raid with TNT and earn everything yourself. Retro's Factions is an OG factions server for Java and Bedrock.

What is OG factions?

Factions before it got pay-to-win

"OG factions" is what players call the classic style of Minecraft factions from the early 2010s. Back then, a factions server was simple: you spawned with nothing, made a faction with your friends, claimed land in the wilderness and built a base. Then you raided everyone else.

Your faction's power decided how much land you could hold. If you died too much, your power dropped and enemies could over-claim your base and take it. TNT cannons, obsidian walls and hidden chests were the whole game.

Most factions servers today sell the game instead. Crate keys, god kits, ranks with /fly and money boosters all go to whoever pays the most. That isn't OG factions, and it's why I started Retro's Factions.

The classics

What's the same as the old days

These are the parts of factions I didn't want to change.

Power and land

Every player has up to 10 power and each claimed chunk uses 1. Die and you lose 4. Run out of power and your land can be over-claimed.

TNT raiding

TNT, TNT cannons and creepers break claimed land. Claims stop griefers, not raiders.

KOTH

King of the Hill every day at 3, 6 and 9 PM Eastern. Hold the summit for 3 minutes to win money, a crate key and a title.

The /f commands

/f create, /f claim, /f map, /f sethome, /f ally and /f enemy work the way you remember.

SafeZone and WarZone

No PvP at spawn. Step outside the spawn walls and you're in the WarZone, where anything goes.

A player economy

Farm, mine and sell to earn money. Trade with other players in the auction house. Nothing in the economy comes from a store.

What's new

A few modern touches

I kept the core the same, but some things are better in 2026, so I added them:

  • Bedrock crossplay. Friends on phones and tablets can play with you on Java.
  • Mini games. BedWars, The Pit, Spleef and TNT Run for when you want a break from raiding. They all pay in-game money.
  • A free season pass. 30 tiers of rewards for playing, voting and winning KOTH.
  • Grim anti-cheat. Hacked clients were the worst part of old factions servers.

None of these let anyone pay to get ahead.

A bit of history

Why I made an OG factions server

I first ran Retro's Factions in 2020. When I came back to factions this year, every server I tried had a store full of crate keys and god kits. The players with the biggest wallets ran the server, and everyone else quit after a week.

So I rebuilt Retro's Factions from scratch. The plugin that runs factions is custom, so I could keep the classic rules and leave out everything pay-to-win. Ranks are bought with in-game money, and the store only sells cosmetics and a few small conveniences. Read more about that on the non pay-to-win page.
